News: Troops clear Maiduguri-Biu road of landmines

The acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, has said that Nigerian Army troops have detonated landmines planted by insurgents along the Maiduguri-Biu Road.

Usman said that the road was now safe for usage as adequate security had been provided to ensure the safety of commuters.

Usman, whose comments were contained in an electronic mail on Sunday, said that the landmines were removed by the Special Forces, Explosive Ordinance Devices Unit in collaboration with the police and the local youth groups.

He said that during the operation the team of security operatives successfully detonated four Improvised Explosive Devices planted by the insurgents.

The Army spokesman also advised members of the public to be vigilant. He urged them to report any suspicious movements to security operatives.

The insurgents had reportedly taken over a portion of the Maiduguri-Biu Road on Monday.

Usman said, “Please, be informed that the Maiduguri-Biu Road has been cleared of landmines by a team of the Nigerian Army Special Forces, Explosives Ordinance Devices Unit with support from Nigeria Police and youths in the locality.

“During the painstaking and thorough operation, four Improvised Explosive Devices planted by suspected Boko Haram terrorists were discovered and successfully detonated.

“Commuters are encouraged to use the road as adequate security has been provided.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to further enjoin members of the public to be more security-conscious and report any suspicious persons and movements to security agents.”
