Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode
The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, says sports, tourism, entertainment, arts and hospitality are sectors to engage the youth to keep them away from social vices.
The governor added that his administration would focus on these sectors as a single project to make youths in the state development-focused, as well as fulfill some of his campaign promises.
Ambode spoke on Saturday at the finals of the 2nd Lagos International Badminton Classics, which was held at the Rowe Park, Yaba.
He said he was committed to developing grass roots sports, adding that sports in general would get adequate attention in the next four years of his administration.
The governor also stated that the state government would improve grass roots sports association and ensured that it became a veritable tool for employment.
He said, “What I promised in the course of the campaign was that we were going to take on sports in addition to tourism, entertainment and arts and hospitality. We would take them together and actually focus on them as one single project.
“As a matter of fact, we have decided to establish the Lagos State Sports Commission in line with the National Sports Commission. In essence, all sports associations would get necessary support that they need to thrive.
“One of the things I had promised Lagosians was that we would continue in the path of past administrations to take sports to the next level.”
Ambode said efforts would be made to expand the next edition of the Lagos International Badminton Classics to enable more countries to participate.
He said, “Our administration is committed and we are talking with other sports lovers and sponsors to ensure that the next edition is better than this. My understanding is that we have over 24 nations here present in this tournament, and I know next year, we are going to expand it and then we will also increase the prize money and also ensure that the best of Badminton comes to Lagos.”
