The American Association of Petroleum Geologists, African region, has stressed the need for Nigeria to build more capacity in geosciences, given the high level of opportunities open to geoscientists in Nigeria and the globe at large.
The association, in a statement, said empowering the academia in that regard was cardinal in driving the campaign and sustaining the progress that would be made in the long run.
This, AAPG said, informed a recent training of lecturers of geosciences in 30 Nigerian universities in ‘sequence stratigraphy’.
The five-day workshop was held in Lagos, and was done in collaboration with ExxonMobil, and dubbed “Sequence stratigraphic concepts and principles.”
The workshop’s main lecture was delivered by a professor of Sedimentary Geology at the Department of Earth Science and Engineering, Imperial College London, Dr. Gary Hampson.
The AAPG said the course was designed to assist in building geosciences capacity in Nigerian universities through lecturer training.
Commenting on the initiative, the General Manager, Operations Technical Geosciences at ExxonMobil, Mr. Andrew Ejayeriese, described ExxonMobil’s role in the exercise as part of its continued efforts in building geoscience technical capacity in Nigerian universities.
He said the firm was also building capacities through several initiatives under the University Assistance Programme of ExxonMobil.
On the collaborative effort between the AAPG Africa and ExxonMobil, the Vice President, AAPG Africa, Mr. Femi Esan, said that the AAPG’s goal was to advance the science of Geology, particularly in relation to hydrocarbon exploration and production.
He said the body was also promoting the research and technological innovation required to efficiently produce energy resources in an environmentally sustainable manner.
He added that the AAPG was in Africa to support the professional development of geoscientists in ways that would result in the advancement of the petroleum industry in Africa.
Esan extended appreciation to ExxonMobil for its support of the AAPG’s programmes and events in the region.
